Trip Report: Snow Canyon State Park, Utah!

Date of trip: June 4, 2010

Contrary to its name, winter visitors will rarely find any "white stuff" at this desert park. Snow Canyon State Park is a strikingly colorful canyon about 11 miles northwest of St. George, Utah. Snow Canyon is a little visited park surrounded by red sandstone cliff and walls. Ancient lava flows and red sand dunes punctuate the valley floor. A great place for hiking, rock climbing, and photography. We were there fairly early in the day, so the lighting was very good for photography. One could easily spend a day or 2 here. It can get quite hot in the park during the summer, however.

Snow Canyon is about 12 miles north of St. George, Utah off of Highway 18 in southwest Utah, near the Arizona border. Not an especially big state park, but it has a lot to see in a small area.

The temperature the day I visited the park was going to be about 100F (38C). We we there in the early moring so it was only about 80 by the time we left the park, however, even in the morning the sun already hot. I can image that on a cooler day, hiking and climbing on the rocks would be a lot of fun. It is a rather amazing place where one could spend many hours photographing. The road throught the park is only about 10 miles long, so a ride through the park can be fairly short if you don't slow down to enjoy the view.

The high walls in Snow Canyon are popular with rock climbers. If you look closely, you'll see several climbers on the wall.

The roads in Snow Canyon are all easy sweepers with no traffic and great views!
