Motorcycle Trip Report: A Loop Through Central California

Date of trip: May 14, 2010

I decided to take Friday off from work and go for a ride. I haven't been riding enough recently and I have a lot of vacation days saved up. My objective was to get away from the bay area and ride some open roads. I left my home on the SF peninsula and headed south on Hwy 280 to Hwy 85 and then on to Hwy 101.

The Map

Highway 280 on the San Francisco Peninsula

After passing through Gilroy, I headed east on Hwy 25 to Hollister before continuing south on Hwy 25. Being a Friday, there was no one on the road south of Hollister. I could ride at my own pace and stop to take a few pics along the way.

Here are some pics from Highway 25 south of Hollister.

While riding on Highway 25, I came across a stretch of road that had been recently oiled and graveled. Back in September, I was in a low side accident where I was severely injured, so slippery roads still scare me. I made it through the mile or 2 of gravelly road, but decided that was enough. When I got to the junction of Highway 25 and G15, I encountered more gravel. Rather that find out how far they had oiled and graveled the road, I headed west on G15 to King City. Where I stopped for lunch before more riding.

North of King City I turned east on G16 and rode through some farming areas. County Road G16 north of King City

At the junction of G16 and G17, I turned north on G17 and followed the road to Salinas. G17 followed the east side of the mountains that separate the farming areas south of Salinas from the Pacific Ocean. G17 was empty of traffic. Along G17 I passes Mission Soledad.

When I hit Salinas, it was time to head home. From Salinas, I rode Hwy 101 back through Gilroy and on to Highways 85 and 280 until I got home.

Mileage for the day was 301 miles and a little over 6 hours on the ride. It was a good day.
