Motorcycle Trip Report: The Santa Cruz Mountains and the Pacific Coast Highway

Home

Date of trip: May 7, 2010

Back in September I had a lowside accident that resulted in 10 rib fractures, a shattered scapula, a broken collar bone, nerve damage in my back, and a week in the hospital. The injuries took a long time to heal and I went through a lot of pain, but things are really looking good now. I've been able to take short rides for a couple of months now, but a long ride has only been a dream since the accident. I don't have much pain in my shoulder any more, so on Monday took a day off from work to take a nice long ride. I went out into the Santa Cruz Mountains and along the Pacific Coast Highway south of San Francisco. Being a Monday, there was no traffic and the roads were fine. The weather was clear and warm. A perfect day for a ride. I left home on the San Francisco Peninsula and headed south along Skyline Blvd. before turning west on Highway 84 and then on Pescadero Road and Bean Hollow Road to get to the Pacific Coast Highway.

As I rode into Santa Cruz I met a guy on a GSXR who had ridden down from Vancouver, B.C. We talked for a few minutes before he continued south to Monterey. I stopped for lunch in Santa Cruz. I found a great falafel place near UCSC. Oh boy, food!

That was good, buuurrrppp!!!

Not being in a hurry to get home, from Skyline Blvd, I took Alpine Road to La Honda just so I could look at the views from the road. Views from Alpine Road

I could tell I was getting close to home when I rode past the Crystal Springs Reservoir.

I was out and about for about 6 hours. The longest day riding since my accident. My shoulder and back were a little stiff and sore when I got home, but nothing to complain about. This ride was just a little test to see if i can go on some multi-day rides later this summer. Looks like I'll be riding a lot more in the near future. This ride was way more fun than going to work!!!
